Vertigo

Vertigo causes you to lose sensation of yourself or the objects you see around you. Generally, nausea, vomiting and balance disorders may cause this condition to occur.

This disease often causes dizziness. However, not all dizziness is vertigo. Among the symptoms of vertigo, vertigo may occur especially with acute ear infections and inflammation of the inner ear.

The condition causing this disease is identified and treatment is started.

What are the Causes of Vertigo?

Although dizziness is used in everyday language to refer to symptoms such as feeling faint and darkening of the eyes, dizziness in the clinical sense is defined as vertigo, which is defined as the feeling of the elements of the environment turning towards the person while he or she is standing.

For example, a person who is truly dizzy perceives the objects and walls in the room as if they were spinning. The causes of vertigo in this sense are examined in two groups: Central dizziness: It is caused by problems in the central nervous system.

Especially dizziness originating from the brain, brainstem and cerebellum is examined in this group. Vertigo can be seen as a symptom of some diseases such as bleeding, stroke, migraine, tumor, multiple sclerosis (MS) that may occur in these organs. Peripheral dizziness: Dizziness originating from the inner ear and balance nerve are considered in this group. Peripheral dizziness, which is more common than central dizziness, includes dizziness caused by the labyrinth and semicircular canals, dizziness caused by disorders of the balance nerve, dizziness caused by the stones called utricle and saccule that provide balance not being located correctly, and conditions such as Meniere's disease. ;

How is vertigo treated? What are the treatment methods?

Benign positional vertigo, the type of vertigo in which crystal movement occurs, can be treated with correction maneuvers. There are maneuvers used in benign positional vertigo. It can be diagnosed with the Dix-Halpike test and corrected with the Epley maneuver. Patients should not be given medication before maneuvers. Corrective maneuvers occur in sessions.

In the first sessions, maneuvers are performed until the dizziness subsides. Afterwards, sessions can be repeated every 4-5 days. Recurrence time varies depending on the patient. If the dizziness is very severe and there is crystal movement in several canals in the ear, drug treatment is also given.

What should those with vertigo pay attention to?

Sleeping patterns should be one of the main factors that people with vertigo should pay attention to. Irregular and insufficient sleep causes people to be unable to rest and invites many diseases, including vertigo.

Everyone should take care to get regular and sufficient sleep. Stress should be avoided, that is, factors that cause stress should be removed from a person's life. It is important to stay away from stress as excessive stress also negatively affects the immune system. It is possible to be protected from many diseases related to vertigo with a strong immune system.

For this reason, healthy and fresh foods should be consumed and excessively salty, fatty and processed foods should be avoided. Having vitamin and mineral values, especially vitamin D, at normal levels also ensures strong immunity. After vertigo treatment, active sports and sudden movements should be avoided. Plenty of fluids should be consumed, foods and drinks containing caffeine such as coffee, cola and chocolate should be avoided and smoking should be stopped.
