Bone Density Measurement

Bone density measurement (bone densitometry) is one of the medical imaging methods used especially in the diagnosis of diseases such as osteoporosis.

The purpose of the test is to determine the density of the bones, that is, the amount of minerals. Mineral deficiency or mineral loss in bones can cause many diseases. One of the most common diseases is osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a disease that affects many people, especially women and men over the age of 50. Detecting osteoporosis as early as possible is important in treatment.

It increases the risk of adverse conditions such as bone melting, fractures and cracks. Therefore, it is important to detect osteoporosis at an early stage and take the necessary precautions. Bone measurement allows the diagnosis of osteoporosis (bone loss) using a very small amount of x-ray.

Osteoporosis is a disease that gradually weakens bones, causing bone fragility. It causes spine, wrist and hip fractures. Weakening of bones is sometimes due to aging and sometimes to other risk factors.

Osteoporosis can also be described as a “silent disease”. This is because osteoporosis does not cause any symptoms until a significant amount of bone mass is lost. Bone tissue loss can be detected at an early age with a bone measurement scan. In this way, doctors can slow down and even stop bone resorption with the right medications before most of the bone tissue is lost. Images of the lower spine and hip are the most commonly used images for osteoporosis screening.

In what cases is bone density measurement recommended?

Menopause A family history of osteoporosis History of diabetes Smoking history Frequent bone fractures Those who show excessive collagen increases in urine examinations and those who have undergone high dose bone content changes
