gynecomastia

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition of overdeveloped or enlarged breasts that can be seen in men at any age. The cause of gynecomastia may be a result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or the use of certain medications. If the part of the breast tissue specialized for milk production develops in male physiology, this may cause emotional discomfort in men and may also impair self-confidence.

Who Occurs Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia can develop at any age; However, it is more common in infancy, adolescence and older men. Although it does not cause a clinical condition that requires medical treatment, it can negatively affect the psychological and social quality of life by causing an undesirable appearance in patients. For this reason, various medical treatments and surgical methods have been developed to eliminate gynecomastia.

What are the Causes of Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia usually occurs as a result of hormonal imbalance. Gynecomastia occurs when the testosterone hormone in men decreases and the estrogen hormone increases too much. Medicines, herbal products or various diseases used other than hormonal imbalances may cause gynecomastia. Some corticosteroids, antibiotics, hormone treatments, heart disease drugs, HIV treatment drugs, antidepressants, ulcer drugs or psychiatric drugs containing amphetamines, alcohol consumption, and the use of protein powders may cause gynecomastia as a side effect.

What are the symptoms of gynecomastia?

Feeling of tenderness in the breasts. Feeling of pain and soreness in the breasts. Discharge from one or both nipples. Difference in size between the two breasts. Feeling of a lump under the nipple.

What is Pseudo-Gynecomastia?

In case of pseudo-gynecomastia, there is only excessive fatty tissue accumulation in the breast and it is usually seen in obese people. These people also have localized fat accumulation in other parts of the body. In true gynecomastia cases, some increase in the mammary glands is definitely observed. In cases of true gynecomastia, the enlarged mammary glands in the breast area are felt like a rubbery mass. In cases of pseudo-gynecomastia, the mass feels like a more homogeneous, widespread and soft tissue. Breast ultrasonography also detects only increased fat tissue. In the treatment of false gynecomastia, an effective method to a certain extent is "liposuction", that is, fat pulling with the help of a cannula.

How is Surgical Treatment Performed in Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size in men, flattens and beautifies chest lines. In cases of high-grade gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue and sagging breasts can be surgically improved and excess skin reduced. Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mammoplasty.
