Advanced Age Eye Diseases

Advanced Age Eye Diseases: There are some age-related eye diseases and vision problems. Cataract, diabetes-related eye diseases (diabetic retinopathy), glaucoma and macular degeneration are the most common of these. It is a very common eye disease that can be treated surgically. Cataract disease occurs as a result of the deterioration of the transparent structure of the lens of the eye.

When the transparent structure is damaged, vision defects occur. Since it is not possible to intervene or prevent/delay with medical methods, it is treated with surgical methods. As a result of diabetes affecting the eyes, problems such as glaucoma (eye pressure) and cataracts are more common in diabetic patients.  Age-related eye diseases: Macular degeneration (macular degeneration), glaucoma, cataract and dry eye are detailed below. Macular degeneration (macular degeneration): It is an age-related eye disease that is usually encountered in individuals over the age of 60. Increasing age is a risk factor for increasing the incidence of the disease. Generally, the average risk of heart disease increases in connection with smoking. The diagnosis of the disease can be clarified by performing examinations such as eye tomography and eye angiography. Depending on the stages of the disease, treatment is carried out by the specialist physician with the help of intraocular injections or a surgical operation called vitrectomy. Glaucoma: It is popularly known as eye hypertension. It causes damage to the optic nerves as a result of increased intraocular pressure. This disease is a chronic and painless eye disease. Eye drops that lower eye pressure may be prescribed to treat glaucoma. At the same time, the course of the disease is examined by applying tests such as OCT and visual field.

For some patients, surgery may be required depending on their condition. Cataract: Although cataract disease is encountered in infancy and childhood, old age is an important reason for cataract formation. Various changes occur within the lens depending on age. Methods such as cataract medication, drops or glasses do not work during the treatment process. Surgery is required in the treatment of cataract disease. Dry eye: Dry eye is among the eye diseases that develop due to aging. With old age, a feeling of stinging, burning and dryness occurs in the eyes. Dryness and other complaints increase as a result of long-term reading due to air conditioning, wind and similar stimuli. In the treatment of dry eye, medical methods such as artificial tear drops and eye pomades are often sufficient.
