Gastric Bypass

What is Gastric Bypass?

The most preferred obesity surgery worldwide is gastric sleeve surgery. If weight loss fails after sleeve gastrectomy surgery or due to various reasons, gastric bypass surgery is performed as an alternative surgery. The process can be summarized as creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting the newly created pouch directly to the small intestine. The procedure is a surgical operation performed to solve weight problems by performing certain procedures on the stomach and small intestine in order to get rid of excess weight. After the operation, the stomach is almost non-existent in size. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The patient is discharged after staying under hospital observation for an average of 3 days. It can be performed through open surgery or laparoscopically.

The patient is likely to lose half of his pre-operative weight within approximately two years after the operation. With weight loss after the operation, health problems related to excess weight may improve. It is appropriate to start the pregnancy process for patients who want to become pregnant after two years. What are the Complications of Gastric Bypass? After gastric bypass, the patient will feel full when he eats very little because his stomach is very small. In this respect, vitamin supplements may be prescribed by the doctor since sufficient amounts of vitamins cannot be taken. As with every operation, there are some complications in the gastric bypass procedure. There is a risk of infection.

There is a risk of leakage from staples and/or stitches placed in the stomach and small intestine. Some patients experience nausea, cramps, etc. After the complaints appear, the inability to eat is observed. There is a risk of dumping syndrome (food quickly descends into the duodenum). There is a risk that the operation will not be effective in weight loss success, that is, there will be no benefit from the operation (the stomach expands again due to not regulating eating habits). There is a risk of low blood sugar after surgery. Since it is a surgical operation and is not reversible, the operation must be carried out with absolute decision and clarity by the doctor and the patient.

What Should Be Considered After Gastric Bypass?

After the operation, it is necessary to review eating habits with a dietician, prepare personalized diet programs and proceed in accordance with this program. After the procedure, a standard diet program is gradually started in the form of liquid, puree, liquid-solid and normal nutrition over a period of 1-2 weeks. In obesity surgery, it is very important to regulate post-operative eating habits, lifestyle, support a healthy diet, take additional vitamin supplements, and have regular check-ups. After the operation, it is recommended that the person avoid heavy lifting, doing movements that will strain him/herself, and sitting or remaining motionless for a long time during the period recommended by the doctor.
