Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a therapy approach based on scientific evidence. It is one of the most widely used types of psychotherapy today. CBT is a short-term, present-oriented and structured psychotherapy method. In this approach, the focus is on current problems that cause the person to seek psychotherapy. It not only solves people's current problems, but also provides them with skills that can be used to solve lifelong problems. Cognitive behavioral therapy gives thought a central role in the conceptualization and treatment of psychological disorders. CBT emphasizes that the environment in which a person lives, the events he experiences, the way he perceives these events, his emotional reactions and behaviors interact with each other. Among these areas that interact with each other and the person's problem, the focus is primarily on thought and behavior. CBT teaches people to find their thoughts related to situations in which they experience distress and to examine how realistic and appropriate these thoughts are. By reshaping appropriate and dysfunctional thoughts, the person develops realistic and appropriate thought styles instead of these thoughts. In this way, the person's emotions and behaviors are changed. The therapy process usually begins with cognitive (thought) interventions. This is followed by changes in the field of behavior. In some cases, the first step is to start from the field of behavior. During therapy, the client and therapist collaborate to identify and understand various problems, aiming at recovery. In addition, it is aimed for the person to apply the skills learned during the treatment to his daily life.
