Ankylosing spondylitis

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?

It can be defined as an inflammatory disease that can cause union of some bones in the spine. It is a type of arthritis that causes inflammation in some parts of the spine. If the ribs are affected by this fusion, difficulty in breathing may occur. It makes the spine less flexible and a hunched posture occurs.

What are the symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis?

Symptoms include fever, neck pain, inflammation of the area where the tendon connects to the bone (enthesitis), fatigue, loss of appetite, stiffness in the lower back and hips, anemia, mild eye inflammation, and pain.

How is Ankylosing Spondylitis Treated?

To diagnose the disease, a physical examination is first performed and the disease history is listened to. The diagnosis is then made through examinations such as x-rays. After the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis is made, the treatment process is planned according to age and severity of the disease.

The treatment process is primarily carried out to reduce pain and stiffness and prevent deformities. The treatment process begins with medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and NSAIDs. Muscle strengthening exercises are supported by physical therapy practices.
