Nutrition in Eating Disorders

What are eating disorders?

Eating disorders are chronic diseases that require long-term treatment. It is often seen together with mental disorders such as depression, substance abuse and anxiety disorders. Its basic characteristics are that the individual sees himself as fat, that eating accompanies emotional turmoil that cannot be coped with in real life, that he is afraid of being fat, and that he has physical appearance disorders related to a sharp desire to lose weight. We can classify eating disorders into 5 basic groups: Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia nervosa, Orthorexia nervosa, Night eating syndrome, Binge eating syndrome, Anorexia Nervosa. These individuals have a disorder in their body perception, and even though they are thin, they do not see themselves as weak. They eat very small portions of food because they are afraid of gaining weight, and they lose weight quickly.

They have constipation and irregular menstruation problems, and hair loss due to vitamin deficiency. Even if they eat little, they feel like they have eaten too much and feel nauseated and bloated. They become hyperactive, depressed and aggressive. They do a lot of sports and exercises, and after a certain period of time, they move away from the social environment. Bulimia Nervosa Unlike Anorexia nervosa, they often have food attacks and eat too much. They then expel the food they have eaten from the body by vomiting or with the help of laxatives and diuretics. Sometimes they are too skinny or too overweight, and their body weights vary. Dental and stomach disorders are especially common in these people. In nutritional treatment, patients must receive oschotherapy along with medication use. They may usually refuse treatment, but efforts should be made to get them to accept it. Eating habits should be regained with a balanced and healthy nutrition program. Orthorexia Nervosa is a diet focused on consuming extremely healthy foods. In orthorexia nervosa, the goal is not to lose weight. Over time, people begin to reduce food variety and portion sizes. Thus, vitamin deficiencies occur in their bodies because they always consume the same foods. Night Eating Syndrome These people usually eat normally throughout the day. In the evening and at night, they become incapable of feeding themselves, and over time, their desire to wake up from their sleep and eat something increases and becomes a habit. Afterwards, they feel regret and tend to become depressed. Overeating Syndrome The person cannot maintain portion control and consumes too much food. Excessive food consumption also paves the way for many chronic diseases.

What Should Be Done to Treat Eating Disorders?

Generally, the disorders of these people are of psychological origin and it is necessary to work with a psychologist. The most suitable diet for the situation should be prepared together with the dietician.
